Thesis: Larger shareholdings of lower level management and non-CEO high level management in the corporate governance and ownership structure of a bank significantly increase a banks risk of failure (Professor comments: As you write be open to the possibility of perceiving a thesis that asserts the causal mechanism behind the correlation. ) Core Source article: The Roles of Corporate Governance in Bank Failures during the Recent Financial Crisis by Berger An “analytical summary” is not a paraphrase and does not reproduce the organization of the article (except by accident). In fact, an analytical summary is not a summary of the article, but a summary of the argument. (In other words, do not write about the medium, write the message.) Your summary should not include phrases like “In the first section of the article, the authors say . . . .” Do not write about the author’s rhetorical strategy — e.g., “The author says this to excite the reader’s interest.” Your focus must be on the logic of the argument. Your goal is to demonstrate a deep understanding of the argument. To do so, you must analyze its content: identify distinct components and the relations among them. Most importantly, you must find (or devise) a thesis that will allow you to reassemble the contents of the article into a coherent and interesting (non-obvious) argument. Writing an analytical summary is not easy. In fact, it’s nearly impossible until you have absorbed the article so thoroughly that it resides in your brain as a single, bright thought (“I’ve got it!”). Use: core source article by Berger. In addition to clear communication of the reasoning extracted from the core-source article, your final paper will include an “extension”: a further development of some aspect of the core-source article. This is your chance to demonstrate the depth of your understanding of the core-source article through the use of additional logic and/or evidence. This might be a refutation or elaboration of one element of the article’s thesis, making explicit how the additional observations support, modify, extend, or undermine the article. The sole purpose of the extension is further proof of your understanding of the core-source article. The extension should be about a single idea, developed in some depth, rather than a set of superficial observations. It is best that you base the extension on one or more relevant articles, which you will cite appropriately. Use: Merton, Robert C. (1977) “An Analytic Derivation of the Cost of Deposit Insurance and LoanGuarantees: An Application of Modern Option Pricing Theory.” Cite additional sources as needed.
