Your essay will open with an introduction that states the main idea and your response to the essay. Then in three to four paragraphs, you will summarize the essay. Following that, you will respond to the argument with agree, disagree, or mixed feelings and why in one to two paragraphs. In the next section of your essay, you will respond to two or more of the following questions in two to three paragraphs for each question. Finally, you will conclude with your own alternative solution to the problem or a call to action that is different from the article’s. Writing a personal response essay helps you assess your own thinking in response to a reading. Writing your response helps you examine, revise, and possibly gain new insights into the text (Channell and Crusius 31). Use the following questions to help you form a response to your article. You do not have to answer every question in your response. Simply use them as a jumping off point for gathering your own thoughts and ideas. Be sure to connect your thoughts to specific passages in the text. Quote or paraphrase the text, and then respond to it. What is the central issue raised in the reading? What are the authors views on this issue? Did you have views on the issue before reading? If so, how would you compare your prior thinking with the authors? Do your previous observations and/or experiences confirm, illustrate, or contradict what the text says? Did the reading present any new ideas that had not occurred to you before? Did the reading raise some new questions you had never considered? Did it question some assumption or belief you had been holding? If you could ask the author one question, what would it be? Why would this question matter to the line of thought or argument in the text? What other writers views have you read on this topic? How do their views compare the views expressed in this reading? Even if you did not accept all of the views and ideas in the reading, what can you take away from it to add to your knowledge about the topic? Draw connections between the world of the text and your own world, things you have experienced, prior knowledge you bring to the text. Offer insights into the meaning of the text, as revealed by relationships between parts of the text, analysis of the language, style, arrangement, and voice of the author. Evaluate the thinking; tell why the writing is convincing to you or not. Reflect of the significance of the text, explaining the degree to which reading it contributed to your understanding of the topic.
