 Both Socrates and Louis Riel defend general political causes in addition to defending themselves against specific legal charges. Indeed, their trial speeches may be assessed both as forensic rhetoric (forensic = “for the court,” i.e., for a purpose defined by the court procedures) and as political rhetoric (i.e., defined by a broad political purpose independent of the court proceedings). In one respect, both speeches fail to accomplish their legal purpose, since both defendants were pronounced guilty and executed. It remains an open question, however, whether these speeches are effective political speeches.
